The story behind the cosy cat
Our Story
SnuggleStream started the way most good ideas do — out of personal frustration and a lot of love. We're a long-distance couple who wanted nothing more than to curl up on the sofa and watch a film together, except the sofa was in two different cities.
We tried the usual workarounds. Counting down "3, 2, 1, play" over a video call. Browser extensions that broke every other week. Streaming service "watch party" features that only worked half the time and required everyone to have the same subscription. None of it felt right. The playback would drift, someone would buffer, and the magic of a shared movie night evaporated into "wait, what scene are you on?"
So we built SnuggleStream.
What SnuggleStream Is
SnuggleStream is a free, browser-based watch party platform that keeps video playback perfectly synchronised between everyone in the room. No downloads, no browser extensions, no subscription walls. You create a room, share the code, and watch together — whether that's a film you've uploaded, a YouTube video, a direct link, or a screen share.
Play, pause, and seek are synced in real time over WebSocket so everyone sees the same frame at the same moment. There's a built-in chat with GIF support so you can react to the plot twist without switching apps. You can upload your own video files and SnuggleStream will transcode them into adaptive HLS streams for smooth playback on any connection speed.
Why We Keep It Free
SnuggleStream is a passion project, not a startup. We built it because we needed it and we keep it running because other people need it too. Long-distance relationships are hard enough without having to pay for the privilege of watching a film together. The platform is supported by unobtrusive ads and the generosity of users who buy us a coffee.
Our Values
- Privacy first. We collect the bare minimum to make the service work. No tracking, no profiling, no selling your data. Room data is ephemeral — when the room empties, it's gone forever.
- Simplicity. No feature bloat. Sign in, create a room, share the code, watch. That's it.
- Reliability. If you press play, your partner should see it play. Sync is the core promise, and we take it seriously.
- Accessibility. Works in any modern browser, on any device, on any connection. No downloads, no plugins, no paywalls.
The Cat
Every good project needs a mascot, and ours is the SnuggleStream kitty — a pixelated cat who just wants everyone to have a cosy movie night. The name "SnuggleStream" came from the idea that even when you can't physically snuggle up with your partner, you can still share the warmth of watching something together.
Built for Long-Distance Love
While SnuggleStream works great for any group of friends who want to watch something together, it was born from the long-distance experience. We know what it's like to miss someone and to want something — anything — that makes the distance feel a little smaller. A synchronised movie night won't close the gap between two cities, but it can make an evening feel like you're on the same sofa.
